The Ministry of Education and Government of India has initiated the APAAR ID, known as the “One Nation One Student ID Card.” As a part of the National Education Policy(NEP) 2020, the Union Ministry has come up with a plan to create unique ID numbers for school students across India.

Why In News

  • The Ministry of Education and Government of India has initiated the APAAR ID, known as the “One Nation One Student ID Card.” As a part of the National Education Policy(NEP) 2020, the Union Ministry has come up with a plan to create unique ID numbers for school students across India.

  • The ‘One Nation One Student ID’ scheme, known as ‘Automated Permanent Academic Account Registry (APAAR)’ will be a lifelong ID number that tracks students’ achievements and academic journeys as well as make transfer from one school to another easier.

  • Every skill they pick up will be credited here,” T G Sitharaman, AICTE chairman said. 
  • Along with that, the system is also aimed at helping students digitally store exam results, sports, Olympiad outcomes and help keep a track of students dropping out so it can mainstream them.
  • APAAR ID will be a lifelong identifier that will track students’ educational journeys and achievements from pre-primary to higher education. It will be linked to the student’s Aadhaar ID but will not replace it.

How It Will Be Applied

  • The government will seek consent from parents before creating an APAAR ID for their child. Parents can also withdraw their consent at any time.
  • State education departments have directed educational institutions to organize meetings between teachers and parents from October 16 to October 18 to discuss the importance and relevance of establishing an APAAR ID for students.

  • Teachers will also update students’ blood group, height, and weight, as this information will be used to create the APAAR ID.
  • The government has assured that student data will remain confidential and will only be shared with government agencies when necessary.

Reason For Unrest Among Teachers

  • This increasing list of non-academic tasks has led to unrest among teachers.
  • Schools have been asked to hold a special parent-teacher meeting from October 16 to 18 to create awareness about APAAR ID among parents and to inform them about its uses before taking their consent.
  • Schools just completed work of students’ AADHAAR Card update on UDISE.
  • Now, a new ID card is in the making. To update each student’s height, weight and blood-group on UDISE. This leaves no time to focus on academics.”
