A virtual G20 Summit is on the cards which India is hosting before its presidency concludes by the end of the month. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will chair a virtual summit of G20 leaders on Wednesday evening, to discuss the implementation of the Delhi Declaration adopted in September and several new challenges that have emerged since then.

Why In News

  • A virtual G20 Summit is on the cards which India is hosting before its presidency concludes by the end of the month. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will chair a virtual summit of G20 leaders on Wednesday evening, to discuss the implementation of the Delhi Declaration adopted in September and several new challenges that have emerged since then.
  • A virtual summit of the G20 after conclusion of the physical summit was “something very rare” and “rather exceptional” as no other presidency held such a meeting to take forward the guidance provided by the participating leaders into action for a just and equitable world, Kant said at a media briefing.

Who Is Participating Or Not ?

  • The Chinese Foreign Ministry has confirmed that President Xi Jinping will not participate in the scheduled G20 Virtual Summit on Nov 22, 2023.
  • Premier Li Qiang will represent China at India’s invitation. This aligns with India’s Foreign Ministry announcement that nearly all leaders will attend virtually.

  • Justin Trudeau is also expected to participate in the summit. This despite the ongoing tension between two countries since the Canadian Prime Minister accused India of having a “possible link” in the murder of pro-Khalistan separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.
  • However, the Russian Tass news agency, quoting a Kremlin statement, has confirmed that Putin will take part in the extraordinary virtual G20 summit on Wednesday,  Meanwhile, speaking to The New Indian Express US ambassador to India, Eric Garcetti, said he cannot confirm whether President Biden will attend the India-led virtual G20 Leaders Summit.

Agenda of the Virtual Summit

  • The meeting aims to provide an impetus to implement the Delhi Declaration unanimously agreed upon by all members at the 18th G20 leaders’ summit held in New Delhi in September.
  • The declaration “demonstrated the commitment of the G20 Leaders to address global challenges in a very ambitious, inclusive, decisive and action-oriented manner,”
  • The virtual meeting of G20 leaders is taking place a day after leaders of the BRICS grouping held an extraordinary meeting on the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

  • The summit’s agenda focuses on climate change and green energy, crucial for the upcoming United Nations Climate Change Conference or COP28 in the UAE.
  • Since September’s Leaders’ Summit, G20 has committed to tripling global renewable energy capacity by 2030 and doubling energy efficiency by 2030. The COP28 outcomes include the first Steering Committee meeting of the Green Hydrogen Innovation Centre.

  • India’s advocacy secured a commitment of USD 44.5 million for the Global Initiative on Digital Health. Initiatives based on G20 AI Principles, UNESCO’s Ethical AI Guidelines, and India’s “AI for All” Principle are underway.
  • Principles on Lifestyles for Sustainable Development (LiFE) are being shared globally through COP28 and among youth by the IEA. Initiatives like a Mentorship Platform for women’s leadership and TechEquity, addressing the gender digital divide, are in development during India’s Presidency.
